Week 11 of Pregnancy

11 weeks of pregnancy marks the end of the embryonic period and is out of the danger zone for the development of most congenital abnormalities.  The baby is now called a foetus.

Changes in your body at Week 11 of Pregnancy

You may still be feeling tired and nauseous but this should soon pass. You should have gained about 10% of your total weight gain. Hormone changes might result in irritability and mood swings and you might feel a little dizzy at times.

Common body changes you may notice at 11 weeks pregnant include:

  • Breasts will be full and tender
  • Darkening colour around your nipples
  • Visible bluish veins due to blood supply

Baby's Development at Week 11 of Pregnancy - Baby size: 8.5cm

Your baby will be growing quickly at the moment but you will not be able to tell the gender from a scan just yet.  If your baby is a boy he will start to produce testosterone.  Your baby’s skin will be transparent and he or she will be able to swallow.  All major organs have formed although the lungs are still developing.  The foetus will be able to kick punch and arch its body as well as form a fist and wrinkle its forehead.

Below are typical developments which occur during the 11th week of pregnancy:

  • Baby’s eyelids have fused
  • Teeth are beginning to form
  • The external genitals move outside of the body
  • Hair follicles of the skin are forming
  • Ears will be moving up from the neck into position at side of the head
