False labor pains come at irregular intervals in comparison to true labor contractions which are more regular, stronger and last for more than 30 seconds and go on up to 60 seconds.
In false labor the pains are concentrated around the lower abdomen. In true labor the pain starts in the lower back going to your abdomen.
False labor pains may go and come on their own when you change positions or when you move, with true labor however the pain is persistent and continues no matter what you do.
Signs Of False Labor
Irregular contractions for example with intervals of ten minutes, six minutes, two minutes etc.
No progress seen over some time.
Contractions concentrated around the lower abdomen.
Any change in position or any movement may stop or slow down the contractions.
No show of blood or membrane rupture.
What To Do When You Feel Contractions?
False labor pains can make the labor stage a rather long process. Your sleep may be interrupted and you may get irritated and cranky. But you need all the rest you can get, as you are preparing for labor pains as will be more intense than what you are experiencing now. Hot water baths, drinking hot liquids are known to help. Also you may time your contractions and of course be in constant touch with your doctor.
Even if you have monitored your contractions and know the signs of pregnancy pain, you may not still be able to know whether you are in the actual labor stage or not. False labor pains are very common but vary for every woman. Some may not even get them. It is very natural to have labor pains in pregnancy and you should be prepared for them.
